Spooky magical project by Louise Crosbie

Hi there.

Today is the last day of my year-long term with Mixed Media Place and it seemed fitting to end my term as I started it… 

With something of a spooky magical nature as Halloween is next month. (Not that I need that as an excuse to make spooky magical things).

Hidden in the deepest part of the forest is a little house belonging to the "fairy bone" collector. The bones of fairies still hold magic so the little bone collector gathers them. 

I used a lot of rust paste in this project along with black gesso, Finnabair's skull moulds and bottle moulds (among others).

I’m going through a bit of a green and rust phase at the moment, so today's project reflects that (much like my July project did lol).

But this time, instead of a very two-dimensional art journal I’ve decorated a very three-dimensional wooden box.

I started with a Finnabair stencil to make some texture using 3D gel (or modelling paste). Then I built my composition by glueing it all into place with heavy body gel. 

I love Finnabair metal flowers and leaves for building 3D compositions. They go especially well with this woodland nature elf/fairy theme. 

I’m giving this to a friend who is a fellow “Elder scrolls “ fan.

This month, I’m sharing an art journal spread as my design team project. 

With a good journal or a well-prepared journal, you can use a lot of mixed media techniques and supplies.

If the paper in your book or journal isn’t really mixed media paper you can use gesso to prepare it before starting. 

I’ve used lots of layers in this project. Some layers got covered up some didn’t but each layer inspired my “next move” so even those I can no longer see are playing their part in the final look. 

I did a coat of clear gesso first to prepare my page before started my journaling. I added some Finnabair tissue paper which I glued on using gel medium. Then I added texture through a stencil. 

Next, I started adding my paint. when it was dry I added torn old paper and book pages along with some butterflies cut from paper napkins.

I’ve used liquid acrylics, rust paste, waxes, Sparks paint (along with a few images and embellishments).
