Doodle Butterflies

Creativity is all about taking risks, don't you think?
Today we have some tips from Justi on how to emboss on fabric - the effect makes it totally worth trying out!

The base for my next art journal page was a piece of grey felt with small light dots. To make it more attractive and interesting I used several mixed media techniques.

The easiest way to create an interesting background on your fabric is to stamp it with different media.
I usually start with stamping black and grey designs with StazOn ink.

Next, I add colors and stamp different circles from 3rd Eye collection with blue and yellow Luminarte Silks.

On the top of my page, in the right corner there is a butterfly emobssed with vanilla white powder. This techniques is much more challenging than embossing on paper because the surface is more inflammable.
It’s not so difficult but it's good to remember the main rule to not destroy your art.

Step1: Put your fabric on the cardboard.
Step2: Ink the stamp with watermark inkpad and stamp the image onto the fabric.
Step3: Shake copper embossing powder onto the stamped image and shake off the excess.
Step4: Heat the embossing powder with the heat tool on tempered glass or heat resistant mat.
The distance between the fabric and your heat tool must be minimum 20cm.
Don’t keep it stable. Please, shake your hand left and right to avoid hot air destroying your fabric.

Having prepared my background this way, I could paste my butterflies. I cut them from the doodled page which I made myself.
To make it, I used several shades of blue, green and yellow Gelatos painted with water.

I hope that you found here some interesting tips on how to create an extraordinary background for your work.  :)

See you next time.

Happy (and Creative) Women's Day! :)

Is there anyone celebrating today? :)
Well...here on Mixed Media Place we don't really need any special occasion to play with delicious media, paints and stamps but today we actually have a reason to celebrate - Girl Power! ;)
Just take a look!

In some countries March 8th is a very special day. It's Women's Day. I couldn't miss this occasion and prepared my "power of femininity" collage with special dedication for all of you, Ladies. :)
I wish you that every day is full of happiness and love for you.

A simple way to create an interesting background for mixed-media collages is to combine tissue with matte medium. Just paint the canvas with a coat of matte medium, apply pieces of tissue paper and let the medium dry.  Next, apply gesso and create texture with acrylic paints and modelling paste.

When the surface is dry, stamp the designs with black Archival Ink. I chose Prima Vintage Vanity Book stamp and 3rd Eye Lines.

I also discovered a new use for my lovely Gelatos. I made a homemade mist mixing water and small pieces of pistachio gelatos. I needed exactly this colour to paint lace in my work. It's really a simple way to make a unique shade of colour of mist that may be missing in your collection.

I cut some small pieces of gelatos means using my knife and mixed them with water. My tip to make the colour lighter or more pastel is to mix such gelatos mist with white Dylusions Ink Spray.

Most of the paper techniques described here on Mixed Media Place blog can also be applied to fabric. I love mixing different materials, bases, media and techniques. In this work I added a layer of embossing powder to the fabric to create a unique embellishment.

The finishing touch of my composition are two clay buttons painted with Luminarte Silks Azurite and purple acrylic paint mixed with white gesso.

I hope that I encouraged you a little bit to experiment with different media, materials and techniques.
See you next time

Let's mix it up!

Some people just have this amazing talent of turning ordinary things into pure poetry.
What could be more ordinary and simple than a cardboard bag? Well, not any more...
Just take a look at Justi's amazing art!

Są ludzie, którzy mają niezwykły talent do przemienia zupełnie prozaicznych rzeczy w piękną sztukę.
Cóż może być bardziej prostego i zwyczajnego od kartonowej torebki? A jednak...
Spójrzcie tylko jak wspaniale zaczarowała ją Justi.

This small bag is a mix of fabrics, cardboard and canvas. I thought I would encourage you to use different sorts of materials in your art.

Ta malutka torebka to mix tkanin, kartonu i płótna. Pomyślałam, że zachęcę Was do miksowania różnych materiałów.

At the beginning I used a stencil from Finnabair's Elementals collection and created texture on translucent synthetic polyester. Next, when the molding paste that I used was dry, I sprayed the whole background with different types of mists: Melted Chocolate Dylusions Ink Spray and Sienna Glimmer Mist.

Aby ją stworzyć, najpierw na przezroczystej poliestrowej tkaninie zrobiłam teksturę przy pomocy maski z kolekcji Elementals Finnabair oraz pasty strukturalnej. Kiedy pasta wyschła, całość pokolorowałam różnego rodzaju mgiełkami: Dylusions Ink Spray w kolorze Melted Chocolate i Glimmer Mist w kolorze Sienna.

The metal flower embellishment is painted with two Luminarte Silks: Azurite and Chestnut Brown and fixed to a small textile piece with extra heavy Gel Medium. This medium is perfect when you want to glue any embellishments to any kinds of surfaces.

Metalowy kwiatowy dodatek pierwotnie był w nieciekawym złotym kolorze. Pomalowałam go farbkami Luminarte Silks w kolorze Azurite i Chestnut Brown. Następnie przymocowałam go do kawałka płótna przy pomocy extra heavy Gel Medium. To medium idealnie nadaje się do przyklejania wszelkich dodatków do najróżniejszych podłoży.

Next I made some doodle patterns with a sewing machine on the whole fabric background. To make my work more shiny and to add some depth I made some circles with Luminarte Silks using the same colours as for painting my metal flower. In the end, I added touches of Glossy Accents and glued everything onto a cardboard bag.

Używając maszyny do szycia zrobiłam doodlingowy wzór na całej powierzchni tkaniny. Aby dodać odrobinkę głębi i blasku mojej pracy zrobiłam kilka kółeczek farbkami Luminarte Silks w tych samych kolorach, które wcześniej użyłam do mojego kwiatka metalowego oraz pomalowałam cały dodatek Glossy Accents. Całą kompozycje przykleiłam na torebeczkę z tektury falistej.

I hope you feel encouraged to experiment and to use different kinds of materials in your art.
Lots of love,
Justi

Mam nadzieję, że zachęciłam Wam do poeksperymentowania z użyciem różnych materiałów w pracach.
Pozdrawiam
Justi
