Amazing journey by Eirini + video

Hello dear friends. It's Eirini again with a new layout, a bit messy and excessive this time for me...

I was inspired by the movie of Theo Angelopoulos - The weeping meadow(trilogy) - and the very tragic events happening in my country with the refugees from Syria, trying to find a place to live peacefully. The photo i used is from the movie, but by the time i saw it, i thought of people coming from the sea, to find a better future. Such strong feelings and a big dilemmas at the same time... So i wish there was a solution and a happy end for everyone!!

I have used the new paper collection of 7Dots - Homegrown - and i was amazed by the quality and beauty of the papers!! I tested the papers strong enough until they proved that they passed  the test successfully - the quantity of water and pastes, one layer over another. Finnabair products helped also to highlight and protect my details... Enough talking ... Let see my the details....

Gel Medium 101

Hi there creatives, today it is all about Talens Gel Medium and great ways of using it.

First of all, gel medium in general can range in thickness from watery to very thick and have lots of different finishes. The Talens gel found in Mixed Media Place store has two different finishes: Matte and Gloss. Today I want to show you a few ways of how I use gel medium.

Matt: I typically use matt when I make collages and don't want a glossy result on my project. I also use it to increase the transparency and reduce the gloss of acrylic paints.

Gloss: I often tend to use it on canvas and on projects I want to have a glossy finish. When I use it in my art journal, I usually put a sheet of wax paper or something similar between the pages, the glossy effect sometimes makes the pages stick together and this prevents it from doing so.

I also use gel medium to glue, seal, prime, reduce the use of paint (mixing it with paint is cost effective), image transfers, altering heavy goods to a canvas (extra heavy gel medium is perfect for this), making texture and the list keeps going. Below you can see some of my projects where gel medium is playing a big part of the result.

The cloud below is made out of acrylic skin made of gel medium gloss mixed with blue paint. When dry, I stamped on a cloud and cut it out.

These hearts needed 3 days of drying time, but it was worth waiting. I stamped on one, painted the back on another and the rest I kept as they where because I loved the pink color they had taken from the stencil.

Here I've used gel medium to create the pattern:

Dziewczynki - art-journal page

I'm a huge fan of Agnieszka-Anna's style. Last time when we met I asked her if she can show me how she works and give me some step-by-step instructions. She said yes and after an hour I was holding in my hands my own art-journal page made exactly the same way Agnieszka showed me. 

Jestem wielką wielbicielką stylu Agnieszki-Anny. Ostatnio gdy się widziałyśmy poprosiłam ją o to by pokazała mi jak pracuje i zrobiła mi mini-warsztat. Zgodziła się i po godzinie trzymałam w dłoniach moją własną stronę art-journalową przygotowaną dokładnie według instrukcji Agnieszki. 

I must say one thing - I love this page! However it sounds and even you'll think I'm a bit selfish. But Agnieszka is a true inspiration and I would never do such work without her instructions. Thank you Agnieszka :)

Hello, today I'll show you my pages in Finn's round robin.

The art-journal's base is an old book, and the challenge has been to use the images selected by Finn.

Witajcie, dzisiaj chciałam Wam pokazać moje strony w wędrującym żurnalu Finn. Bazą żurnala jest stara książka, a zadaniem wykorzystanie zdjęć przygotowanych przez Finn.

The text says: „it was such a long time ago... Jadwiga didn't remember their names”

First, I primed my pages with tea as my medium and next I sprayed it with blue glimmer mist . When it dried I painted it with gel medium using a mask with flowers - gel medium gets transparent after drying.

Na początku zamalowałam strony mocnym naparem z herbaty i popsikałam niebieską mgiełką.

Kiedy strony przeschły przez maskę z kwiatami nałożyłam medium żelowe – które po wyschnięciu robi się przezroczyste.

Next I glued different pieces of adhesive plasters on my background, and then the photo. Using a soft pencil I highlighted the picture.

Następnie nakleiłam na tło kawałki różnych plastrów i przykleiłam zdjęcie. Fotografię podkreśliłam obrysowując ją miękkim ołówkiem.

At the end I glued my fav striped washi tape, stamped and splashed background with white liquid watercolour ecoline and black ink.

Na koniec przykleiłam moja ulubioną tasmę washi, postemplowałam i pochlapałam strony czarnym tuszem i białą ecoliną.

I am happy to tell you who is our July Guest Designer :) Riikka Kovasin from Finland :)

Jestem szczęśliwa mogąc oznajmić, że naszą lipcową gościnna projektantką jest Riikka Kovasin z Finlandii :)

Nazywam się Riikka Kovasin i jestem fińską mixed-mediową scraperką. Najszczęśliwsza jestem, gdy mogę połączyć moją miłość do pięknych produktów z możliwością ubrudzenia się różnymi mediami. Uwielbiam też eksperymentować z różnymi, niescrapbookingowymi projektami.

Mieszkam w Helsinkach, stolicy Finlandii, z mężem i naszymi dwoma córkami. Moja rodzina jest nieustającym źródłem inspiracji i głównym tematem moich scrapów.

Miałam szczęście zostać projektantką w kilku Design Team'ach, a moje prace były publikowane w prasie scrapbookingowej. Obecnie pracuję dla angielskiego magazynu Scrap365 i blogów wyzwaniowych CSI oraz PaperStories. Uwielbiam też tworzyć kursy video i ogromnie lubię prowadzić warsztaty.

I'm Riikka Kovasin - a Finnish mixed media style scrapbooker. I'm happiest when I can combine my love for the beautiful products with the possibility to get messy with different paint media. I also love to experiment with different, non-scrapbooking related products. 

I live in Helsinki, the capital of Finland with my husband and our two daughters. My family is a constant source of inspiration and it's the main topic in my layouts. 

I have been fortunate enough to get chosen to different design teams and get published. I currently work for the UK based scrapbooking magazine Scrap365 and the challenge sites CSI and PaperStories. I also love to make videos and tutorials and I enjoy tremendously to teach workshops.

I love using mixed media in my projects! The discovery of gesso and spray inks shook my world and changed my scrapbooking style forever. Now I love to personalize the papers with different paint media and leave my hand print in them, so to speak.

Uwielbiam tworzyć projekty mixed-media! Odkrycie gesso i mgiełek wstrząsnęło moim światem i na zawsze zmieniło mój styl scrapowania. Obecnie uwielbiam personalizować papiery używając różnych farb i że tak powiem, zostawiając na nich ślad mojej ręki.

I made this minialbum about an event I attended in April here in Finland, Intohimona Skräppäys, translated Passionate about Scrapbooking. This event is often referred here in Finland using just the initials, IS. The event has workshops, shopping opportunities and you can scrapbook on site.

Stworzyłam ten minialbum o wydarzeniu, z którym uczestniczyłam w kwietniu - jest to Fiński zlot scrapowy Intohimona Skräppäys, tłumaczony jako "Scrapbookingowa Pasja". O tym zlocie w Finlandii mówi się używając skrótu IS. W trakcie zlotu są warsztaty, stoiska sklepowe i można sobie swobodnie scrapować.

I used different techniques inside the album. I wanted it not only to show my style but also document what I had learned during the event. Thus some of the techniques are such I use constantly, and also taught during the event and some are such I learned or discovered during the event.  The cover is inspired by workshops by Birgit Koopsen. The watercolor technique inside the album was introduced by Anna-Maria Wolniak in her workshops.

Wewnątrz albumu znajdziecie wiele różnych technik. Chciałam nie tylko pokazać mój styl, ale także udokumentować to, czego się nauczyłam podczas zlotu. Część technik jest przeze mnie stale używanych i uczyłam innych, jak je stosować właśnie podczas IS, ale części nauczyłam się i odkryłam je dopiero tam. Okładka jest inspirowana warsztatem Birgit Koopsen. Techniki pracy z akwarelami z wnętrza albumu pokazała Anna-Maria Wolniak podczas swojego warsztatu.

The covers of the album are made using a piece of cardboard, die cut strips, crepe paper and mists. As final touch I added some stamping and pencil doodling there too. The decorations on the cover include a piece of aluminium tape embossed and then colored with alcohol inks. I bound the album using twine and made the spine using aluminium tape.

Okładki albumu są wykonane z tektury, wycinanych pasków, mgiełek i krepiny. Ostatnim muśnięciem było stemplowanie i bazgranie ołówkiem. Wśród ozdób znajdziecie także kawałek aluminiowej taśmy, embossowanej, a później pokolorowanej tuszami alkoholowymi. Album połączyłam w całość używając sznurka, a grzbiet wykończony jest taśmą aluminiową.

The inner pages hold details made with gesso, mists, alcohol inks, stamping and Ecoline watercolors. The decorations of the album include some of my favorites - flair buttons, chipboard shapes and wood veneers.

Wewnętrzne strony są pełne gesso, mgiełek, tuszy alkoholowych, stemplowań i kolorowania ecolinami. Ozdoby w albumie to także moje ulubione chipboardy, elementy drewniane i ozdobne "przypinki".
