Starry night by Lori Woods

Hello creative friends!

Sometimes, when I'm looking for inspiration, I like to search for colour palettes to see what interesting combinations I can find. This project was inspired by a beautiful teal and pale gold palette that made me think of a starry night with lights twinkling in the heavens.

I started with a star-shaped canvas and worked on the background first. I love using Finnabair paper paste to create background texture- the thick fibrous consistency allows you to shape it in interesting ways. I used a simple knife to create the starburst pattern for this project. Once I had painted the background with my selected colours- Stormy Ocean and Unicorn's Hair, I decided to add an extra touch of gold around the edges using Vintage Gold icing paste. Icing paste is great for using through stencils but also works perfectly with a dabbing brush to outline projects and colour embellishments.

I gathered together a selection of mould pieces and embellishments to start building my composition. I coloured some with paint but left the rusty mechanical as I wanted the rust colour to be a good contrast to the shine of the other two colours.

Once I had attached all the elements with Heavy Body Gel, I started to add extra areas of interest using texture powder, mini art stones and mica flakes. My project was finished off with Vintage gold flakes to add even more sparkle and shine.

I hope this inspires you to look for new and interesting colour combinations to incorporate into your project and to try new techniques to create interesting backgrounds and texture :)

I've made a tutorial video for you here:
